On February 20, 2022, ConnectEd invited Professor Belle Wang of the Department of English at Sam Houston State University, whose work focuses on technical communication and writing, to lead a workshop on writing inquiry emails to prospective advisors. An academic writing workshop for students applying to master’s and doctoral programs.
The workshop was designed for students applying, or planning to apply, to master’s and doctoral programs. Working from sample emails, Professor Wang showed how to present research interests and experience clearly and concisely, annotating drafts live as participants followed along.
Participants brought so many questions that the session ran well past its planned hour.

For many applicants, the first email to a prospective advisor is the hardest part of the process to get right, and one of the least taught. Hearing from a writing professor made the expectations behind these emails visible and gave participants a model they could adapt to their own fields.
